How close is the field?

Closer than the marketing suggests — with one twist. For everyday drafting, summarising and Q&A, the big four assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) are all good, and your choice hinges on ecosystem and price. Agent workspaces like Genspark attack from a different angle: finished deliverables rather than conversations. The gaps open up in long-document work, coding assistance, deliverable generation and enterprise controls — which is where our individual reviews focus.

The ecosystem question dominates

ChatGPT has the largest standalone platform and plugin ecosystem. Claude leads on long-document reasoning and writing quality. Gemini is the natural pick inside Google Workspace. Copilot is the obvious choice for Microsoft 365 organisations. Increasingly, you are choosing a productivity suite as much as a model.

A note on pricing models

All four offer capable free tiers and ~$20/mo individual plans. Business pricing diverges: per-seat team plans on one side, enterprise-wide Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace licensing on the other. We compare on total cost for the way you actually work.
