What actually matters in field-service software (UK)

Four truths the category?s marketing goes out of its way to blur.

Research Updated October 2026

The platform is the hub; the ecosystem is the product

No field-service platform replaces your accounting, marketing, telephony or payments stack — the winners are the ones designed not to. BigChange with Xero/Sage, HubSpot, RingCentral and what3words around it is a different tool from BigChange alone, and that is true of every vendor here. Score integration demonstrations, not integration lists.

Bundled hardware is a trojan horse — in both directions

BigChange?s compulsory tracker-plus-tablet bundle inflates the sticker but can be genuinely cheaper than software plus separate tracking, tablets and MDM. Trap one is comparing it to software-only prices. Trap two is owning hardware you did not need. Compute total monthly fleet cost both ways.

UK paperwork is the moat, and US tools cannot cross it

Gas certificates, F-Gas records, SFG20 schedules, RAMS documents — platforms built for the UK treat these as first-class objects; global tools treat them as form templates, if at all. This is why Jobber can be the best UX in the category and still the wrong answer for a regulated UK trade.

Your vendor?s owner is part of the spec now

Consolidation is the story of this market: simPRO Group owns BigChange, private equity owns everyone?s roadmap. Ownership can mean investment and stability, or overlap and eventual product sunsetting. Make continuity a contractual term — price protections, export rights, notice periods — because vendors change hands faster than businesses change software.
