Four pricing primitives, one trap each

This market prices four different ways and comparisons fail if you mix them up. Per-site managed hosting (Kinsta, WP Engine) is predictable but scales linearly. Per-server cloud (Cloudways) is dramatically cheaper at ten-plus sites but you become part-sysadmin. Reseller-style unlimited (20i, Hostinger) is unbeatable unit economics on light sites with shared-resource ceilings. Enterprise quote-only (WordPress VIP, Pantheon) buys governance, not speed. The trap is always the same: comparing a headline intro price against a renewal price in a different pricing family.

Agency features are a workflow, not a checklist

A real agency platform gives you: one dashboard for every client site, free staging you can bill-transfer to the client at handover, white-label branding, per-site user roles, and bulk operations (updates, backups, caching). WP Engine’s billing transfer and Kinsta’s MyKinsta bulk tooling are the benchmarks; 21,000+ agencies sit in these partner programs for a reason. If a host merely allows multiple sites on one plan, that is multi-site — not agency hosting.

The UK lens most comparison sites miss

For UK B2B agencies three things matter that US reviewers ignore: London or UK data-centre regions (Kinsta, Cloudways, WP Engine, 20i and Krystal all offer them; verify before signup), VAT invoicing without FX friction, and support staffing in UK hours. The two UK-native players here — 20i and Krystal — are genuinely competitive on agency economics while giving you UK data residency by default, which some client contracts now require.
