How to choose agency and enterprise hosting for real B2B workloads — five decisions that determine whether hosting becomes your margin or your recurring emergency.
1. Classify the estate before pricing anything
Segregate your client sites into brochure/lead-gen, busy content, and commerce/app classes. The correct host for each class differs by an order of magnitude in cost. Most agency hosting disasters are classification errors: WooCommerce stores living on brochure-tier shared resources, or nine-figure-care brochure sites sitting on premium managed plans that deliver nothing a £4 plan would not.
2. Demand workflow, not just multi-site
Real agency hosting means: one dashboard for every client, free staging with clean client handover/billing transfer, white-label brand presence, per-site user roles, and bulk operations across the estate. WP Engine demonstrates the standard. A host that merely permits many sites on one plan is selling capacity, not agency tooling — price it accordingly.
3. Model year-two pricing, always
Intro pricing exists to make comparison tables unusable: SiteGround steps roughly 4–8× at renewal; Hostinger’s £2.99 becomes ~£8–11 after 48 months; "from $14" Cloudways servers realistically cost $50–150 once production-ready. Build every business case on renewal/loaded pricing, and choose flat-pricing vendors (Kinsta, 20i) when you resell hosting — your margins should compound, not expire.
4. Use the UK lens deliberately
Decide per client: do they need UK data residency (some contracts demand it)? VAT invoicing? UK-hours support? London regions exist at Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudways, SiteGround and Hostinger; UK-native 20i and Krystal give residency by default with paperwork finance teams actually like. This is also the angle US-dominated comparison content cannot serve you on.
5. Decide who owns operations, then price it in
Concierge managed hosting pays other people to care; per-server cloud (Cloudways) pays you to care. Neither is cheaper without counting the labour: an agency sysadmin hour is not free, and a client-outage hour is expensive. The correct comparison is total cost of hosting plus babysitting, divided by sites — run that number for your real portfolio size before believing any pricing page.
