What actually matters in agency & enterprise hosting
Four truths the hosting market’s pricing pages are engineered to obscure — from renewal economics to what "unlimited" really means.
The renewal price is the price
Hosting is the only B2B category where a 4–8× year-two price increase is a mainstream business model. SiteGround’s intro-to-renewal step, Hostinger’s 48-month £2.99, and "promo" pricing across the industry all rely on laziness and switching friction. Flat-pricing vendors (Kinsta, 20i, Cloudways’s pay-as-you-go) deserve visible credit for refusing the game — and your spreadsheet should only ever contain renewal numbers.
"Unlimited sites" is a resource model, not a promise
20i’s unlimited reseller tiers and Cloudways’ unlimited-sites-per-server are honest designs with honest ceilings: finite CPU, RAM and I/O shared across the estate. They work brilliantly when the portfolio’s combined demand stays inside the resources, and fail spectacularly when it does not. The skill is estate capacity planning — reviewing total resource consumption quarterly and upgrading the platform before the slowest client forces the issue.
Agency hosting is a product you sell, not a cost you eat
The highest-margin thing a web agency can do is stop giving hosting away as an admin chore and sell it as infrastructure-plus-care: white-label hosting (20i), staging and handover (WP Engine), or managed performance (Kinsta) packaged into a monthly plan with SLA language. Agencies that productise hosting convert a cost centre into recurring revenue; agencies that absorb it subsidise clients until the first outage ends the relationship anyway.
Enterprise hosting buys governance, not speed
Above roughly $25k/yr (WordPress VIP territory), you are no longer buying milliseconds — Kinsta and VIP serve pages comparably fast. You are buying code review, compliance attestations, FedRAMP-aligned options, contractual SLAs and a phone number that reaches an engineer at 3am. Enterprises that understand this buy VIP happily; enterprises that do not pay five figures for a brochure site and remain quietly exposed on both speed oversight and governance at once.
